Austin, Texas Music lovers and travelers aiming for an affordable winter getaway have another reason to visit the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Free Week, Austin’s iconic admission-free winter music festival, is set to return January 9–10, 2026 across downtown venues in the Red River Cultural District.
Now in its third decade, Free Week has grown from a one-venue event into a citywide celebration featuring more than 80 local bands across a dozen-plus venues. Performances will take place at well-known spots such as Mohawk, Stubb’s, and Barbarella, with genres spanning indie rock, country, electronic, Latin, punk and more offering something for nearly every listener.
The festival was originally created in 2003 at the legendary Emo’s as a way to boost business for clubs and musicians during slow winter months. Since then, it has become a beloved Austin tradition that supports the local music economy and culture.
Unlike many ticketed music events, all Free Week shows are free to attend though donations are encouraged to help compensate artists and sustain programming throughout the year. Because venues collaborate closely during the festival, visitors can easily walk between shows, explore downtown Austin’s nightlife, and enjoy nearby restaurants and bars.
Free Week’s emphasis on local and regional artists gives emerging musicians invaluable exposure, reinforcing Austin’s reputation as a place where live music thrives year-round. Many performers are making their first major showcase appearances, ensuring visitors have a chance to discover new acts alongside familiar favorites.
For travelers planning January trips, the accessibility and variety of performances make Free Week a compelling reason to experience Austin beyond traditional winter attractions. With no ticket cost and a vibrant downtown atmosphere, the festival continues to attract both locals and visitors eager to immerse themselves in the city’s music heritage.
