A foreign traveller’s honest take on South India has struck a chord with social media users, turning his travel video into a viral hit. Rory Porter, who has visited India twice this year, shared a short Instagram video in which he ranked some of the most popular destinations he explored across the southern part of the country. His key advice for first-time visitors was simple and clear: start with South India, because the experience is one you “won’t regret.”
Porter began his journey with Goa, even acknowledging that it is sometimes debated whether Goa falls under South India. Despite that technicality, he included it due to his overwhelmingly positive experience. In the video, he described Goa as an “absolutely unbelievable place,” praising its long coastline, relaxed atmosphere, and unique sights such as cows and dogs casually roaming along the beaches. He also highlighted the friendliness of the locals and the quality of food. According to Porter, Goa is one of the best places in India to rent a car or motorcycle because of its relatively calm roads. Based on his overall experience, he rated Goa nine out of ten.

His next stop took him deeper into Kerala, where he visited Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha. Here, Porter stayed overnight on a traditional houseboat while exploring the famous backwaters. He shared that the experience of cruising through the waterways, meeting fellow travellers, and enjoying freshly cooked local seafood prepared by the onboard chef made the stay especially memorable. Describing the experience as “unbelievable,” Porter once again gave Alleppey a nine out of ten rating.
From the backwaters, Porter travelled inland to Munnar, a hill station known for its tea plantations and lush greenery. He noted the region’s scenic beauty, friendly people, and cultural experiences, including watching a martial arts performance. Although his stay was limited to just one night, he found Munnar to be incredibly picturesque and rated it eight out of ten.
The final destination on his South India itinerary was Kochi. Porter admired the city’s cleanliness and distinctive architecture, which reflects Portuguese and Dutch colonial influences. He also appreciated the city’s overall vibe and hospitality, ultimately rating Kochi eight out of ten.
Porter’s candid reviews and straightforward ratings have resonated widely online, offering international travellers a relatable and experience-based guide to exploring.
